Woodward Academy Academy Wide AI Policy — Flint AI Policy Library

Woodward Academy Policy for the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

1. Definition

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the predictive output of human intelligence generated by machines. It uses computer algorithms, massive data sets, and decision-making processes currently used to perform specialized tasks that have traditionally been done by humans. AI will continue to improve its ability to process large amounts of data, recognize patterns, and make judgments or predictions toward continuous evolution. These technologies have been applied in numerous fields, such as healthcare, finance, automotive, entertainment, and customer service, transforming industries and creating new possibilities.

2. Purpose

Driven by our mission, Woodward Academy recognizes the importance of staying abreast of AI's potential as a tool for education without sacrificing students’ cognitive liberty. We acknowledge AI literacy as an important and evolving component of a student’s learning journey. To that end, this policy aims to identify the responsible and ethical use of AI while providing the parameters necessary to ensure academic integrity, nurture the tenets of the Portrait of a Woodward Learner, and uphold our commitment to our role as a national model.

3. Student Responsible Use

3.1 Compliance with AI Tool Terms and Conditions

Students at Woodward Academy are required to adhere to all terms and conditions set forth by the AI tools when permitted to be used. This includes respecting the privacy of other individuals, using the tools for educational purposes while at school, and complying with any licensing agreements or usage restrictions. This includes abiding by the age requirements of AI tools as well as the mitigation of sharing any type of PII (Personally identifiable information), such as names, school names, birthdates, addresses, etc.

3.2 Recognizing Biases and Inaccuracies

Woodward Academy students should be aware of the potential biases and inaccuracies present in AI algorithms and systems. Woodward Academy is working on providing instruction to students and teachers regarding how to recognize and critically analyze biased AI-generated information as well as misinformation.

3.3 Responsible Use of AI on Assignments

Artificial Intelligence may be used on assignments as authorized by the teacher(s). Teachers will designate the amount of acceptable AI usage on assignments. This may include full, partial, or no use. Teachers will establish the usage level as outlined in the Generative AI Acceptable Use Scale below. Please note that the default usage is zero.

3.4 Use of Deepfake Technology

The use of Deepfake technology, which involves digitally altering or fabricating images, videos, or audio recordings to misrepresent reality, is strictly prohibited. Students are not permitted to create, distribute, or share Deepfake content that manipulates the likeness, voice, or actions of any individual within or outside the school community. This includes, but is not limited to, the use of Deepfake technology for the purpose of deception, harassment, bullying, defamation, or any other inappropriate behavior. Violation of this policy will be treated as a serious offense and will be subject to disciplinary action, which may include suspension, expulsion, and/or legal consequences.

3.5 Proper Citation and Justification

Any use of AI in Woodward Academy assignments must be properly cited, explained, and/or justified as referenced in the Generative AI Acceptable Use Scale above. If a student is found to have used AI tools inappropriately or in instances of AI-related plagiarism or cheating, the appropriate disciplinary action will be taken in accordance with the Academy’s Honor Code.

4. Teacher Responsible Use

Woodward Academy encourages faculty to familiarize themselves with generative AI tools and leverage them when appropriate to nurture critical thinking, creativity, productivity, and innovation. Departmental or subject-specific policies pertaining to the integrity of specific academic processes will take precedence over individual faculty usage.

4.1 Approved Faculty AI Tools

Due to the risk of sharing personal information, faculty must only use the Academy-sanctioned AI tools when it involves student, family, school data, or any other personally identifiable information (PII). This includes, but is not limited to, giving feedback on assignments, family communication, and internal Academy-wide document analysis. It is acceptable for faculty to use non-sanctioned AI tools that don’t include personally identifiable information, such as rubric creation, lesson planning, project-based learning ideas, trip planning, etc.

4.2 Acceptable Use Scale and Mitigating Bias

Teachers utilizing AI on assignments will use the Generative AI Acceptable Use Scale to communicate the degree to which AI can be used on assignments. In coordination, teachers utilizing AI on assignments should educate students on the potential biases, limitations, and ethical considerations associated with AI technologies, as well as how to critically evaluate AI-generated information before its use on a designated assignment.

4.3. Deepfakes

Woodward Academy faculty are prohibited from creating Deepfake content as outlined in section 3.4 above. Teachers should use discretion when creating Deepfake content for academic purposes.

4.4. Grading and Feedback

Woodward Academy values the importance of personalized and comprehensive feedback as it pertains to a student’s mastery of learning. To that end, faculty may use AI tools to enhance their feedback to students but should not allow the AI tools to author the student’s final grade on an assignment. Faculty may only use Academy-endorsed tools. In addition, teachers should never upload any type of PII (personally identifiable information) for students, teachers, or the school into an AI platform.

5. Woodward Academy’s Commitment

5.1 Ongoing Professional Development

Woodward Academy is committed to the ongoing education of all faculty and staff regarding the use of artificial intelligence resources to enhance learning in purposeful and innovative ways. The Director of Learning Design and Innovation will partner with the Instructional Technology and Learning Specialists to provide appropriate training and professional development opportunities to teachers on the effective integration and utilization of AI tools in the classroom. This training will keep teachers informed about advancements in AI and best practices for determining the role AI might play within their curriculum.

5.2 Ongoing Review

Woodward Academy acknowledges the rapidly changing landscape of AI and is committed to periodically reviewing and updating this document based on advancements in AI technology and educational practices. Administrators, teachers, and students at Woodward Academy are encouraged to provide feedback and suggestions to ensure the policy remains relevant, effective, and in alignment with Woodward Academy’s mission and vision.
